SensiLab & Monash Art, Design and Architecture

SensiLab, Monash University is a team of storytellers, artists, makers, hackers, designers, developers, musicians, coders, scientists, theorists, luthiers and builders. Through our research, we explore the innovative creative applications and undiscovered opportunities of technology. Working across disciplines, approaches and materials, we approach each inquiry with curiosity and rigour in order to learn through creating. We acknowledge process as well as outcome and value the experiential.

Project: Drawbotic DB-1: A Drawing Robots Platform

We normally think of drawing as an (almost) exclusively human activity. DB-1 explores what art made by an autonomous, non-human intelligence might look like and how robots might exhibit creative behaviour. This project connected research and design to scale these experiments from the lab to a product made using advanced manufacturing and materials. These robots serve as an experimental platform for testing different theories about autonomy, creativity and authenticity in art made by machines.
