Graduates of the Year Awards 2025

About Graduates of the Year Awards
The Graduates of the Year Awards (GOTYAs) is the DIA’s flagship program first introduced in 2003 for emerging designers, and created to support and celebrate exceptional Australian designers as they embark on their careers.
Tertiary institutions are invited to nominate their top graduates in either of two qualification levels Higher Education and Vocational in any one of three categories — Place, Use, Interact and Convey. These categories align with the Occupation Standard Classifications for Australia (OSCA) classifications 2421, 2422, 2423 and 2424.
Nominee portfolios are anonymously evaluated on their design excellence based on a transparent judging process and criteria. Finalists are interviewed by a panel of judges to determine their design skills and readiness for employment within the Australian design industry.
GOTYA winners receive recognition from the design community, mentorship, prizes, and connections with potential employers. This program provides valuable real-world feedback from experienced designers to both graduates and tertiary institutions.
Australian tertiary institutes that are DIA members and are registered training organisations or registered higher education providers are invited to nominate. Nominations are open to graduates who have completed their formal studies in 2024 in a full time or full-time equivalent undergraduate and honours tertiary course.
The information pack can be downloaded from here.
The Graduates of the Year Awards are generously supported by Stylecraft and Dulux.
Categories
The GOTYAs are judged based on two entry levels - Higher Education (AQF 7+) and Vocational (AQF 5 & 6).
Our comprehensive award categories for the Graduate of the Year Awards are carefully aligned with the Occupation Standard Classifications for Australia (OSCA) classifications to celebrate excellence across the full spectrum of design disciplines.
Please note the addition of a new category: Convey. This category provides a focussed bracket for graphic designers and illustrators who express ideas visually. This separates graphics out from the Interact category which has more of a focus on digital interfaces and service experiences.
Our categories reflect the diverse ways designers shape our world—through the spaces we inhabit, the objects we use, the systems we navigate, and now, the visual communications that inform and inspire us.
Through these four categories, we honour the full spectrum of design excellence and innovation emerging from Australia's design education institutions, recognising the crucial role designers play in shaping our experiences, environments, and visual culture.
The entry fee is $150 + GST per nomination. Registered Entity Membership is a criteria of entry. Educators can nominate up to six graduates per level per category.
